With a state championship, a 45-0 record and a leading role on the first Lemont team to win a state trophy, senior Matt Leibforth has all the credentials to be The Herald-News' Wrestler of the Year.
The previous four times Minooka wrestling coach Bernie Ruettiger took a team to IHSA dual-team state finals he came home with an empty feeling. For Ruettiger, the fifth time was the charm.
Minooka came back and topped Sandburg 26-20 to capture the Class 3A dual state wrestling championship Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The win marks the first state title in school history.
Montini had little trouble obtaining the Class 2A state wrestling title Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. They defeated Crystal Lake Central 47-19 in the final, giving the Broncos their third straight state crown.
Sandburg, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by Illinois Best Weekly, won its first five bouts against top-ranked Minooka in the 3A title match.
But the Indians stormed back to win eight of the next nine matches and a 26-20 decision.
