While the Tinley Park wrestling team appeared as an early dark horse to contend for the South Suburban Blue title, reigning champ Lemont proved it’s still the cream of the division, winning Wednesday’s dual meet 49-15 at Tinley Park.

“We have a lot of experience with our seniors, and that’s helped give us some early success,” Lemont coach John St. Clair said. “As a coach, you look at the negatives and can’t really dwell on the positives, but we had some kids wrestle pretty well today against a solid Tinley Park squad.”

Lemont (12-0), totaled five falls on the day. Bobby Bromberek (138 pounds) led the charge in his first match of the season, winning at 1:32 of the first period.

“Bobby’s been out with an injury,” St. Clair said. “I thought he moved and transitioned really well for someone who had to knock some of the rust off.”

John Tomala (195 pounds) and Chris Giatras (182) earned first-round falls for the Indians, while Glenn Malecki (132) and Jake Kaminsky (152) won by fall in the second period.

Lemont held Tinley Park off the board over the first four matches, and didn’t give up a victory until Khaled Khalaf (106) earned the Titans a 7-3 decision in the sixth bout of the day.

After a hot start that saw Tinley Park sitting at 10-2, the Titans are now 11-6 in duals. Coach Ryan Dolan is perplexed by the ever-changing temperament of his team, and he’s detected a lack of passion since a Dec. 10 victory over rival Oak Forest.

“At this point of the season, I don’t know what to expect from my team,” Dolan said. “At the beginning of the year we had ideas that we’d accomplish a certain amount, and we’re confused right now. It’s tough to watch, knowing that our effort could be better. And that’s not taking anything away from Lemont because they are a good team.”

Lemont’s Mike Devitt (220) engaged in the day’s most exciting match, against Tinley Park’s Dan Korycki. Tied at 4 after regulation, Devitt earned the decision with a two-point takedown in overtime.

Ryan Glynn (113 pounds) secured the lone fall for the Titans.
