Tim Donnelly is starting to wrestle like its February.
The Notre Dame senior went 4-0 at Glenbrook South’s Rus Erb Invite on Saturday to win the title at 138 pounds. Three of his wins were major decisions, including his 16-0 win over Grant’s Devin Monroy in the finals.
“Once I got that first takedown, I turned it on,” said Donnelly, one of four Dons in championship matches. “I felt pretty confident, and I feel good right now.”
Donnelly, who also finished first at Hoffman Estates’ tournament last weekend, is ready for the challenge at the upcoming Dvorak Memorial, one of the best tournaments in the country.
“We’ve been working hard in the room,” said Donnelly, who raised his record 16-2 on the season. “We’ve been training like Hoffman Estates was regionals, Glenbrook South was sectionals and the Dvorak is the state meet.
Kevin Stahmer also won a title for the Dons, beating Loyola’s Michael Paloian 5-2 in the finals. Joe Cortese (152) and Ryan Walsh (220) both finished as runner-ups.
Quinton Quarles was Grant’s lone winner, but the Bulldogs won the team title with 214 points.
Runner-up Lane, which totaled 180 points, won two titles in three chances. Danny Carlson was first at 113 pounds, and Max Schneider was first at 145.
Carlson came back to Glenbrook South hungry after taking second place last season as a freshman. He got up early on his way to a 6-3 decision.
“I wanted to jump out big,” Carlson of his win over Cary-Grove’s Logan Hanselmann that improved him to 13-2. “After that, I was trying to play it safe and not make mistakes.”
Schneider stayed undefeated by winning all three matches by fall. He pinned Buffalo Grove’s Jordan Rathjie in 48 seconds to finish first. That was 17 seconds longer than his semifinal win.
Sycamore was one of three teams with at least two champions. Austin Culton won at 160, and Jake Davis was first at 195.
