Wrestling: Undefeated Lemont notches two more wins

Updated: December 10, 2011 11:20PM

Although Lemont’s wrestling team is still putting things together due to its run in the football playoffs, coach John St. Clair likes what he has seen thus far.

The Indians improved to 7-0 on the season after going 2-0 in a six-team dual-meet competition at Romeoville on Saturday.

‘‘We’re still trying to get kids into shape, but when they go on the mat, they’re doing well, and I’m happy with the effort,’’ St. Clair said. ‘‘The guys want each other to do well and to do well as a team so they push each other.’’

After edging Wilmington 34-30 in its opener, the Indians claimed a 46-27 victory over Joliet West in its final dual.

Posting 2-0 days for Lemont were Jake Kaminsky (152 pounds), Mark Kirkman (160), Eric Kirkman (170), Chris Giatras (182), John Tomala (220) and Mike Devitt (285).

‘‘We all work really hard in the room, and that makes us better every day,’’ Kaminsky said. ‘‘A lot of the older kids have been together for a long time, and we look real solid throughout the lineup. Everyone pushes each other.’’

Wilmington bounced back from its initial loss with a 38-25 win over Joliet West and closed with a 39-27 victory over the hosts.

Austin Headrick (113), Stephen Kettner (120) and Alex Peterson (195) went 3-0, and Trent Lyons (126) was 2-0 for the 4-1 Wildcats.

‘‘Last year we squeaked by Lemont, but this year they got us,’’ Wilmington coach Rob Murphy said. ‘‘When you wrestle against the teams that we did, they show you how to be physical, and then we’re able to carry that to Class 1A.’’

Romeoville beat Oak Lawn 41-30 and Marian Catholic 49-30 in its first two meets before falling in its final dual.

‘‘We lost a couple of close matches to Wilmington, but it’s always good to go 2-1 on the day,’’ Romeoville coach Bill Normand said. ‘‘If we keep away from getting pinned in some matches, we can compete well with almost anyone.’’

The Spartans (6-4) received 3-0 performances from Lucas Brandlin (106), Caleb Ramos (132) and Aaron Brooks (145).

‘‘Our team is much stronger than it was last year,’’ Brooks said. ‘‘We have a lot of older kids, and some of our young kids have a lot of potential. We just have to improve on some of the little mistakes that we’ve been making.’’
