Jackie Stern wasn’t sure how she would have handled the situation last season as a sophomore.

With Glenbrook South threatening in the top of the third, the junior second baseman ended the inning with a veteran-minded double play. Stern took the line drive and tossed it to shortstop Ryan Lee at second base for the inning-ending out.

New Trier went on to add to its lead and came away with an 8-1 win that earned the Trevians their second consecutive sectional championship and third in four seasons.

“Last year, I was a little jumpy,” Stern said. “I’m more heady this year. I just had to stay focused and make plays.”

Top-seeded New Trier (22-11) went up 3-0 in the bottom of the second on Lee’s RBI double and later scored two on a throwing error. The Trevians added two in the fourth and two in the sixth to complete the scoring.

The win was New Trier’s third over Glenbrook South in three games this spring.

“GBS is a good team, and it’s always a good game,” Stern said. “We are very excited for this win.

“Our game plan was to hold them in the first and put pressure on them. When we are able to score first, we really calm down. It’s key to score first.”

Five Trevians — Cheslea Delaney, Anna Elliott, Brianna Berceau, Leah Herlocker, Raechel Cloud — won their third sectional title.

Meanwhile, Stern earned her second in a row.

“She’s grown a lot,” New Trier coach John Cadwell said. “She has good instincts on defense, and she’s all over the place. She’s added that dimension of anticipation to her game. She also doesn’t let things affect her as much. She doesn’t let mistakes frustrate her.”

Brigit Ieuter went all seven for the win. The junior ace also had two hits as did Delaney.

Kim Lohre had Glenbrook South’s lone hit. The Titans, who threw Jen Zucker, ended the season 23-11.

New Trier plays for a trip to the state tournament Monday against Lake Zurich at the Glenbrook South Supersectional.

“They’re ready,” Cadwell said of his seasoned club.
