Sandburg caps conference run with big win

Number six Sandburg put an exclamation point on another SouthWest Suburban Blue title Monday with an 8-1 victory over Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort during which the Eagles dominated in every aspect. And on top of that ...
“We had fun doing it,” senior pitcher Lora Olson said. “I mean, we didn’t take them lightly, but we definitely played our game. We stayed loose and didn’t worry about anything but doing what we wanted to do.”
They did it all very well.
For her part, Olson was near-perfect, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five. She also contributed two hits and an RBI to the cause. And there was plenty more where the latter came from.
In all, Sandburg (20-5, 11-1) rocked two Griffins pitchers for 15 hits. Lizzie Wojtowicz, Lexi Bryant and Karissa Kouchis had three each.
More than a few were line drives up the middle. One liner, a rip toward left field by Bryant, almost took out an umpire.
With the state playoffs looming in one week, it’s a fine time for the Eagles’ bats to be warming up.
“We’re just taking everything one step at a time,” Bryant said. “I don’t think we have a peak and an end. We’re just bringing it every game.”
And in Monday’s case, in almost every inning.
The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the first, but East starter Kacyee Hart pitched out of the jam, thanks to a nice play and throw for a force at the plate by third baseman Kaley Jendraszak and an unassisted putout by first baseman Lisa Holcomb.
Sandburg broke through for three runs in the second as Kouchis, Wojtowicz and Bryant all singled. Bryant’s rip was good for two runs, sending the umpire positioned in the hole at short spinning to safety.
Katie Guska made it 4-0 in the third with an RBI single, then Candice Koch (single) scored in the fourth when Jess Perkins’ two-out hot shot handcuffed shortstop Jorgi Calombaris.
The Eagles scored their final three runs in the sixth on a walk by Koch and five consecutive singles, by Wojtowicz, Bryant, Perkins, Kelly Sheridan and Olson. Kouchis added a sixth straight single before the inning came to a close.
“I guess we’re finally hitting to the highest of our capabilities,” Wojtowicz said. “We all knew we could hit this good. But I guess now (the results) are coming our way.”
East broke the shutout in the sixth when Holcomb drew a one-out walk, went to third on an infield single by Jill Reid and scored on a double steal.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Esposito provided another bright spot for the Griffins, replacing reliever Hannah Rosian after the sixth inning and retiring all three Eagles she faced.
