Boys Track: Lake Park claims third straight championship; Dunbar wins three titles

Lake Park became the first big school to win three consecutive titles since Thornwood’s four-peat from 2001-04, beating Edwardsville 48-42. Dunbar also had a big day as Darvell Harris anchored the Mighty Men to victories in the 400- and 800-meter relays and then put an exclamation point on his day by taking first in the 200.

Kelvyn Park’s Jamal McNeeley won the 200 meters in 22.00 seconds, and his teammate, Brian Carter, ran 22.328 to edge Jacksonville’s James Jackson by .001 Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium. Leo captured its second straight Class 1A title, edging Newton 35-34.

Boys Track: Jones’ Jamison Dale breaks Class 2A 1,600 record at state

Jones’ Jamison Dale bettered his previous personal best by more than five seconds and broke the Class 2A record in the 1,600 meters, running 4 minutes, 15.97 seconds in the preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University. Glenbard South also had a big day, advancing three relays and six individual entries for Saturday’s finals.

Marian Catholic’s Julian Childers is attempting to become the first person from the south suburbs to win a tennis state title in singles play. Childers vaulted into Saturday’s final four with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ma during Friday’s state finals at Hersey. Hinsdale Central has maintained its team lead with 40 points.

Morolake Akinson won the 100 meters Saturday in the IHSA Class 3A state meet at O’Brien Stadium in 11.41 seconds, tying the all-class IHSA record set by Morgan Park’s Alexandria Anderson in 2004. To do that, Akinosun had to hold off Lincoln-Way East junior Aaliyah Brown, who was the two-time defending Class 3A champ and who owns the nation’s second-fastest time in the event this spring.
