Lake Forest’s gymnasts hadn’t competed since Dec. 16, but the Scouts looked as though they hadn’t missed a beat, scoring 145.25 on Wednesday to beat Warren (137.35) in a North Suburban Conference dual meet.

But though the 145 number was a good one, veteran coach Robin Straus knows there’s a higher score still out there.

“We’re pointing in the right direction, but I know we can do better,” Straus said. “The rust is out now. Tomorrow, we can build on what we did tonight.

“You should never be unhappy with a 145.”

Winning the all-around was Lake Forest’s Kat McKeon with a 9.425 average. She also won uneven bars.

“It was a good day,” McKeon said. “There was a lot of energy from the entire team. Everyone did a nice job today.”

McKeon was happiest with her winning 9.6 effort on bars.

“I don’t always stick the dismount, so that was pretty exciting,” she said.

During the long holiday break from competition, the Scouts practiced hard in the school’s fieldhouse.

“Those of us who weren’t on vacation came in to practice almost every morning,” she said. “It’s a little bit different coming in early, but eventually you wake up.”

Lake Forest’s problems Wednesday were all on beam, with four falls.

“On the beam, we still have work to do,” said Straus. “We had four falls. That’s two points we gave away so we have to clean that up.”

Warren’s best performer was Alison Rossmann who won the beam with 9.45.

Becky Stochl was fourth in the all-around with an 8.98625 average.
