The Lockport girls bowling team stepped up with a big opening game of the afternoon session, and that started a rally that resulted in the championship of the 14th annual Dane and Celeste Walker Invitational on Saturday at Strike and Spare II in Lockport.
The Porters’ Maroon team rolled a 1,025 fourth game on the way to a 5,346 series. Lockport was in third place, 69 pins behind after the morning session, and wound up winning by 124 pins over Minooka (5,222).
“When you have a tourney like this, the girls that make the spares win,” Lockport coach Art Cwudzinski said.
Four of Lockport’s bowlers medaled (top 15), led by Bri Zabierek, who finished fifth. Megan Szczepanski, Lauren Troha and Allyson Ware all placed in the top 11.
“When a tournament is wide open like this, it’s definitely more fun because everybody has to be on their game,” said Zabierek, who finished with a 1,120 series.
The rest of the 19-team field was: Prospect (5,028), Plainfield North (4,996), Conant (4,892), Thornton Fractional North (4,863), Lemont (4,729), Reavis (4,704), Plainfield Central (4,704), Plainfield South (4,640), Schaumburg (4,628), Lockport-Gold (4,610), Morris (4,605), Sycamore (4,507), Chicago Christian (4,386), Fenton (4,364), Thornton Fractional South (4,321), Lake Park (4,188) and Joliet (3,904).
Brianna Andrew of Chicago Christian was the individual winner with a 1,166 series (194.33 average).
