Lauren Feely and Carmel vaulted their way past the competition at the New Trier Invitational Saturday in Northfield.
Feely led the way on one of the most impressive performance by a vault team in recent memory. Feely scored a 9.90 as the Corsairs scored a 38.925 on the event. Kristen Mirski had a 9.825 on the event, Jen Zeller scored a 9.80 while Anna Brandmeier and Sarah Cohen-Smith each had a 9.40.
“We ended up today on vault which is a good thing for us,” Carmel coach Sarah Doyle said. “They love to end up there and show what they can do.”
Feely was just a small step away from perfection on her Yurchenko-Layout-Full vault.
“I am not disappointed in my score,” Feely said. “I took a step. It was just a little step. But I was very impressed with my vault.”
Feely used her vault to spring her to the all-around title with a 38.375. She also won the floor with a 9.575 and the beam with a 9.45.
“We have all worked very hard this past summer to improve our routines,” Feely said. “I felt real good out there today.”
Hinsdale Central’s Erin Morgan was second in the all-around with a 37.70. Zeller was third with a 37.675, Mirski fourth with 37.075 and Stevenson’s Ali Castriano was fifth with a 37.025. Castriano also won the bars with a 9.475, tying Fremd’s Stephanie Gallo for the title.
Carmel easily won the team competition with a 149.875. Fremd was second with a 146.10 and Stevenson was third with a 144.35.
“That is a real good thing,” Doyle said. “The girls have very high expectations for their performances and not necessarily the scores.
Fremd coach Tim Hamman was pleased with his team’s season-best performance.
“Tonight we made strides staying on the beam and hitting in our other events,” Hamman said. “It will give the girls some confidence. We have been stuck on the 143 train and we beat that today.”
Stevenson coach Judy Harwood was also happy with how her team performed.
“We were a bit undermanned,” Harwood said. “One of our girls is on vacation. But we still have some depth and that helps.”
