Still looking
When Lake Forest Academy defensive end Faith Ekakitie announced last week he’s planning to play at Iowa, the number of uncommitted top football prospects from the area continued to dwindle. The top player who has yet to pick a school is Simeon offensive lineman Jordan Diamond. Other prospects of note who remain undecided include Oak Forest running back Tevin Coleman, Crete-Monee defensive back Anthony Standifer (who has withdrawn his commitment to Michigan), Bremen running back David Smith, Simeon quarterback Robert Gregory (who has reopened his recruiting after previously committing to Arkansas) and Simeon linebacker Shaquille Joyner.
Softball clinics
A former Olympic coach and several U.S. Olympic and professional players will be in Lockport on Monday, Jan. 2 for a pair of softball clinics aimed at local coaches and players. Sue Enquist, a former UCLA and Olympic coach, will be among those on hand for the coaches clinic, scheduled for 6:15-9 p.m. at the Bo Jackson Elite Sports Dome, 17130 S. Prime Blvd. Also scheduled to take part are college coaches Eugene Lenti (DePaul), Kate Drohan (Northwestern), Mike White (Oregon), Ehren Earlywine (Missouri) as well as Beverly Bandits coaches Russell Cooper and Bill Conroy. There also will be an offense and defense clinic for grades 5-8 from 2-5 p.m. Instructors include Enquist, Crystal Bustos and Caitlin Lowe. For more information, go to demariniexperience.com.
On the run
Three area runners competed in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last Saturday in San Diego. In the boys race, Oak Park-River Forest’s Malachy Schrobilgen was 26th with a 5,000-meter time of 15:53 and Beecher’s Grant Nykaza 33rd in 16:07. Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan finished 31st in the girls race at 18:20. The winners were Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s (N.J.) in 14:52 and Molly Seidel of University Lake (Wis.) in 17:22.
