So fresh into the season, the Lincoln-Way co-op vs. Andrew contest Wednesday night had its rough spots.

Lincoln-Way — a regional champion a season ago — won the dual meet with a score of 123.350 to host Andrew’s 108.300.

“We’re looking to go in about 10 points higher than that eventually, but not everyone is back and in season shape,” Lincoln-Way coach Skip Adamson said. “But we’re making some progress with the kids who weren’t on varsity last year.”

After taking second in state in diving, Lincoln-Way’s Kaitlyn Neiheisel was a late arrival to the gymnastics team. The senior appears to already has shaken the rust as she took top honors on the uneven parallel bars (8.900) and in vault (8.800).

“Kaitlyn is still living on the high of being number two in state in diving,” Adamson said. “But she’s starting to get her gymnastics legs underneath.”

Returning Lincoln-Way state qualifier Emma Moris finished second in all-around with a 31.2500. She took top honors with her floor exercise routine (8.400). Sam Duggan finished third overall with a 30.500 for Lincoln-Way.

Andrew competed without four varsity athletes, including returning all-around state qualifier Jamie Valla. The junior is out recovering from thumb surgery, but expects to be back next week after being cleared Tuesday by her doctor.

Thunderbolts freshman Emily Ronan won the all-around with a score of 32.600, making Andrew coach Allison Hack excited for Ronan’s future with the team.

“(Ronan) is doing excellent. I couldn’t be happier to have her on the team,” Hack said. “I know there are still some skills she’d like to add to her routine.”

Val Nehls (26.400) and Jesse Gorka (13.000) had strong showings for the Thunderbolts in the all-around, each placing top five.
