Fremd began a new era Saturday at the Big Purple Invitational at Downers Grove North. And the Vikings came away with the same result.

Fremd won the invitational for the 19th consecutive year with a score of 108.075. It gave new coach Tim Hamman his first invitational victory.

“It is a great way to start,” said Hamman, who replaced Jim Guest, who retired from coaching last year.

“I know what this program means. The girls did a great job today, even with the falls on the beam.”

Lyons was second with a 104.275, Libertyville was third with a 103.55.

Lyons’ freshman Kelsy Kurfirst won the all-around with a 36.875, and captured the vault with a 9.525, the bars with a 9.50 and the floor with a 9.20.

“I thought I did well today,” Kurfirst said. “I was real comfortable out there, even after I fell on the beam. I thought I battled back pretty well.

“It is still a bit intimidating being out here as a freshman. But it is a lot like competing in club. Plus I have my teammates and coaches and they have been very supportive.”

Libertyville’s Mariah Lee won the beam with an 8.875.

Fremd’s Stephanie Gallo was second in the all-around with a 36.10 and Naperville North’s Michaela Robert was third with a 35.275.
