New Trier dominates own sectional
All went about as expected Saturday at the New Trier Sectional.
The host Trevians finished first and second in singles and doubles to capture the championship with 36 points. Runner-up Loyola earned 19 points and qualified three entries for next week’s state tournament.
“I’m very happy with the way it turned out,” New Trier coach Allison Rose said. “It was a good day for New Trier.”
Carol Finke beat teammate Anna Kaplan 6-0, 6-0 to win the title at singles, while Emily Barretta and Gabby Nixon finished first at doubles by beating teammates Rebecca Ritchie and Alana Peters 6-4, 6-1.
“There are some things all six of our girls can work on so we can be sharp for next week,” Rose said.
North Shore Country Day’s Alex Bergman took third place in singles with her 6-3, 7-6 victory over Loyola’s Devon Hubbard. Loyola’s Meredith Abrahamson and Hannah Post finished third with their 6-2, 6-1 win over Ramblers’ Jennie Gault and Nora Hughes.
Hughes is going back to the state tournament for a second year in a row, only this time in doubles. She went 1-2 in singles as a freshman.
Gault and Hughes beat Evanston’s Caroline Cary and Lydia Collins 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals to extend their season.
“I’m happy, but it was a lot of pressure,” Hughes said of the road back to the state tournament. “I’m glad it all worked out.”
The state tournament is Thursday through Saturday, and Prospect is the host.
