HOFFMAN ESTATES — Carmel senior Brian Miller fired a 1-under-par 70 at Hilldale Golf Course to take medalist honors and lead the Corsairs to a share of the team title at the IHSA Class 3A (big schools) sectional boys golf tournament on Monday.

The Corsairs and Lake Forest each shot 301 to earn team-championship plaques. The third team to qualify for this weekend’s state tournament was Barrington with 313.

Lake Forest is the defending state team champ, and the Scouts played like it on a course all agreed was tough due to sloping, fast greens.

Ian Mankoff had a 74 to lead Lake Forest, while Drew Takacs and Charlie Marshall each had 75. Joe Willis had a 77.

Carmel got a 76 from Tommy Schofield, a 77 from Mike Wilkinson and a 78 from Jackson Wietecha.

In golf, besides the top three teams qualifying for state, the top 10 finishers not on a qualifying team advance to play for the individual title.

That group included Grant Heelan (72, Mundelein) and Reed Aren (77, Stevenson).

“I hit almost every fairway. I was never out of position off the tee,” said Miller of his career-best round. “I bogeyed the first hole, but didn’t bogey another hole all day.”

Carmel coach James Nolan was pleased to see his club tie for first.

“We finished strong in our conference meet with a 299. We knew we were peaking at the right time,” he said. “It was going to be a fight to be one of the top three teams here. This is the toughest sectional in the state, with the defending state champs.

“We knew if we could keep up with Lake Forest, we could get downstate.”

The other happy coach was Lake Forest’s Jim Matheson, who’s looking to repeat at state this weekend.

“There’s no doubt that we came in here wanting to win ... not just qualify,” he said. “And we wanted to shoot a good score. I think we did. I have no complaints whatsoever.”

Four members of this Lake Forest team played at state last fall, so back-to-back state titles isn’t out of the question.

“We play some summer tournaments down there (Bloomington) and we were down there early this season. We try to get down there as much as possible,” the coach said.

Willis said he knows the Scouts can do better.

“You’re always going to think you could have shot a few strokes lower, but a win is a win,” he said. “The course was set up pretty tough compared to what we’ve been playing. That’s why you saw some higher scores today.”

The 36-hole state tourney will start on Friday.
