Marian captutes 3A regional, H-F, Caravan also advance

Miles Bailey came into Tuesday’s Class 3A regional at Glenwoodie Golf Course in Glenwood with a goal in mind: Keep playing.
“Last year, I missed going to state by one shot,” Bailey said. “I played it over in my head quite a few times. Even had a couple of dreams about it.”
Bailey, a junior at Crete-Monee, can rest easy going into next week’s sectional at Balmoral Woods, where state berths will be on the line. He not only qualified for the sectional, but won the regional going away. His 4-over-par 76 was Tuesday’s only score in the 70s. Bailey was four strokes clear of runner-up Kevin Stoffle and six ahead of a trio of Marian Catholic seniors: Sean Rea, Terry Jarosky and Bill Hilger.
That threesome, along with Mitch Zavesky, led the Spartans back to sectional competition. Their total of 41-over-par 329, which included an 83 by Zavesky, was nine strokes ahead of Homewood-Flossmoor and 20 up on Mount Carmel, which garnered the final team place available for the sectional.
“We’ve recovered and made up for last year,” Marian coach Jim Mendenhall said. The Spartans’ streak of advancing to sectional play ended last year after a 20-year run.
“Your short game had to be good today,” said Rea, who went out in 1-over 37 but, he said, “blew up on the back side” and struggled home with a 9-over 45. “Going as a team is pretty cool. Last year, only one of us went (to sectional).”
That was Zavesky, who took sixth individually.
Stoffle led Homewood-Flossmoor, followed by fellow senior Logan Lukasik’s 85, junior Austin Smith’s 86 and senior Nick Thiros’ 87.
Three juniors placed in Mount Carmel’s top four, led by Nick Murray (84). Ryan Hernandez (87), Trent Hayes (88) and Louis Vitiritti (90) rounded out the Caravan scorers.
“The pin placements weren’t too hard, but the green speeds were different from usual,” Vitiritti said. “There was more break in them than usual.”
