Marchuk adjusting to swimming without sister

State championships already are on Stephanie Marchuk’s radar.
Most girls who swim for New Trier think about winning titles, and Marchuk is no different.
After all, the junior was a key component of last season’s team title by finishing fourth in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. She also swam leadoff on the first-place 400 free relay.
“It’s hard not to get excited about that,” Marchuk said. “But there’s always room to improve. We’re swimming fast right now, but we still are training hard.”
New Trier won two meets to cap last week. The Trevians opened the CSL South Friday with a 145-40 swamping of Maine South, winning 10 of the 12 events.
Marchuk did her part by touching first in the 200 IM in 2:11.98 and the 100 butterfly (59.25).
Grace Ford was another two-time winner, finishing first in the 50 free (25.44) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.75).
Marchuk was back to her regular events Saturday in the team’s 137-49 victory over Naperville North. She won the 200 (1:53.04) and the 500 free (5:00.24) as the Trevians captured 11 events.
“I like them both,” Marchuk said of the distance freestyle swims. “I guess I like the 500 more because you have time to adjust during the race. You have more time to make your moves.”
Marchuk said she learned much from her sister, Megan Marchuk, who graduated last spring and now swims for Illinois.
“She gave me a lot of advice about what to expect, especially at the State Meet,” Stephanie said. “It’s a lot different without her, but it’s been good.”
Jessica Sutherland also won two events Saturday. The junior won the 100 free (54.09) and 100 backstroke (58.29) and swam on two victorious relays.
Diver Caroline Grant topped the fields both Friday and Saturday. She scored a 243.85 on Saturday after earning 220.20 points Friday against the Hawks.
New Trier was scheduled to swim against Evanston on Wednesday.
