Rivals Naperville North and Naperville Central’s girls swimming teams came together for one very big cause — the fight against breast cancer.
Swimming and Diving for the Cure took place for the first time ever, as most of the swimmers from both teams donned pink bathing caps while swimming Thursday.
“It’s an awesome thing the two teams came together and did, even though we are rivals,” Naperville North coach Kristy Holben said. “I feel like we are always doing something like this together. I think the girls really enjoyed it. They felt like they were really swimming for a cause.”
“It’s nice we could do this with this meet,” Naperville Central coach Sue Welker added.
Host Naperville Central edged out the Huskies, 97-89, in DuPage Valley Conference action.
“(Winning this meet) was one of our goals this year,” Welker said. “I think things are coming together. We’ve been a growing team the past few years, so I feel the girls are working really well together and are so supportive of each other. It’s paid off for us.”
“I definitely expected it to be close this year,” Holben added. “But I thought we performed well. There were a lot of close races, which was awesome.”
In the 200 yard medley relay, Michelle Law, Rachel Prook, Jen Law and Becca Boggle guided Naperville North to a first-place finish with a time of 1:52.26. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Naperville Central’s Maria Villa, Erin Stevens, Lauren Gunn and Emily Sejna clocked in first at 1:42.14. Law, Law, Devin Jacobs and Adrienne Jamieson led the Huskies to first in the 400 yard freestyle relay at 3:43.13.
“Our last relay (400 yard freestyle) looked really strong,” Holben said.
Naperville North also earned first-place finishes from Lauren Bogle (200 yard freestyle), Jen Law (200 yard IM), Becca Bogle (50 yard freestyle), Michelle Law (100 yard backstroke)
Naperville Central’s first-place finishers were Stephanie Jackson (100 yard butterfly), Sejna (100 yard freestyle), Julia Roller (500 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke).
“Julia Roller was outstanding,” Welker said. “She’s been extremely focused.”
In diving, Paige Bloodgood earned the top spot for the Huskies with a 196.55. Next to her was Naperville Central’s Sophia Heiser with a 184.50.
