An atypical week ended in typical fashion Saturday for Kaylee Flanagan.

The Lake Park junior dominated a strong field in the Palatine Invitational at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve in Palatine, running 16 minutes, 51.3 seconds for three miles to win by more than 30 seconds.

That came on the heels of Flanagan’s meet-record effort of 16:44 on the state-meet course in Peoria at last weekend’s Richard Spring Invitational. But there was something different about this race.

“My grandpa died on Monday,” Flanagan said. “I ran this race for him. ... He loved to follow (the sport), so it was an inspiration for me.”

Flanagan, who was ninth in Class 3A last season, has tried a more aggressive race strategy this fall and it’s paid big dividends.

“Last year, I didn’t really go out,” she said. “I ... kind of held back. This year, (the plan is), ‘Why not just go for it?’”

Assumption (Ky.) won the team title 80-134 over Wheaton Warrenville South, which is ranked second in Class 3A by DyeStatIl.com.

Class 3A No. 3 Lake Park edged 3A No. 4 Palatine 153-157 for third. The Pirates were led by sophomore Jessica Lincoln (sixth, 17:38.65) and junior Tess Wasowicz (seventh, 17:39.1).

Maine South sophomore Emily Leonard was the individual runner-up at 17:22.0. Prospect junior Brooke Wolfe (17:25.8) was next, followed by Maine South junior Megan Lemersal (17:35.1).
