Redhawks win in tuneup for DVC meet

With the DuPage Valley Conference girls golf meet less than a week away, Tuesday’s outing between rivals Naperville North and Naperville Central was a good test for both teams to see where each are and what they have to do in the next six days to prepare for the league meet.

Naperville Central improved to 9-3 and 5-1 in the DVC after it edged out Naperville North (8-2, 4-2) 185-192 on a gorgeous afternoon at Naperbrook Golf Course in Plainfield.

“We knew this was going to be a close match,” Naperville Central coach Jane Thompson said.

“We are pretty comparable,” Naperville North coach Greta Williams said. “Our No. 1 and 2, for Central and for us, are very competitive and often shoot similar scores. Unfortunately, this was probably one of our highest nine-hole rounds we’ve had, which was kind of disappointing because this was an important match.”

Naperville Central’s Sarah DeGeeter won match medalist honors after she shot a 40 after nine holes of play.

“(The competition) is really close, so everyone needed to come in and score well,” DeGeeter said. “I just came out and played my best. It’s exciting to be match medalist.”

In addition to DeGeeter, the Redhawks were led by Hannah Zeeb (45), Avleen Bhandal (49) and Lauren Michael (51).

“The lineup is very consistent,” Thompson said.

Both Taylor Arenson and Caroline Pierson posted a 44 each for the Huskies. Christine Grzesiak scored a 51 and Kelsey Torbik finished with a 53.

Wheaton Warrenville South is currently at the top of the DVC standings. Naperville Central’s final conference meet is against West Chicago Thursday. Naperville North will take on Glenbard North Thursday before the big meet at Aurora’s Phillips Park.

“Going into the conference meet — depending on what happens Thursday — the conference standings, if we win Thursday, we should go into it in second place,” Thompson said. “So we are going to go back and do this all over again next Tuesday. It’s been fun because the scores have been all relatively equal. It’s made it a very enjoyable season in terms of being competitive.”

“Hopefully by next Tuesday, we’ll get it together,” Williams said. “I know they can do it.”
