Waubonsie Valley’s boys golf team is suddenly in a little midseason funk — by their standards — but the Warriors’ consistency throughout the lineup showed Wednesday.

Waubonsie was able to win the eight-team Aurora City Meet at Phillips Park Wednesday with a 314, but did it with nobody breaking 78 in the lineup.

Austin Datz and Alex Koulos each posted 78s and teammates Jason Marrs and Alec Meyer followed with 79s to give the Warriors the Aurora City title for the third straight season.

“It’s good to have consistency,” Waubonsie coach Dave Owles said. “It’s a work in progress. We know we’ll have to shoot better. The scores were a little high today. I think we were fortunate some of the other guys (on other teams) maybe didn’t play their best, but to win is a nice accomplishment.”

It was a 10-stroke victory for the Warriors, as fellow Indian Prairie school Metea Valley came in second with a 324. Adam Kreiner, who was the event’s medalist with a 74, led the Mustangs’ strong showing.

Despite some tricky pin placements throughout the Phillips Park track Wednesday, Kreiner was able to win medalist honors on the greens.

“Today it was mostly my putting,” Kreiner said. “I’m not sure exactly how many putts I had, but I was getting up and down when I missed greens. Even when I wasn’t putting it close, I had some good two-putts. The pins were tough. They put pins on the ridges. Every single time I think they put the pins in the toughest spots they could. My putting is what made it for me today.”

Matt Marsh (78) also broke 80 for Metea.

The Mustangs started a solid run of four teams within seven shots of each other behind Waubonsie. Marmion was able to come in third with a 328 thanks to a solid 75 from senior Matt Fazio, who is in his second week back after offseason surgery. He capped his round by landing his approach shot on No. 18 inches from the pin, winding up with a birdie.

“It was a pretty scrappy 75 to be quite honest with you,” Fazio said. “I was getting up and down quite a bit. On 16 and 17, I made two 15-footers for par and then No. 18, just a good shot I guess. It was 67 yards, a little punch sand wedge. I was pretty happy with it.”

Sean Harreld tried to push Aurora Central Catholic past Marmion in the team standings with his 78, but ACC finished a stroke behind the Cadets with a 329. IMSA, despite bringing only five golfers to the event, shot a solid 331 behind matching 78s from Jon Henricks and Peter Howes.

Ricky Rivera’s 80 paced West Aurora (342). Aurora Christian (371) and East Aurora (454) rounded out the field.

But the day belonged to Waubonsie, though the Warriors know that a 314 won’t cut it at conference and in the postseason.

“We just have to figure out how to consistently get a little bit lower,” Owles said. “We have to be better than this. We have to have a goal of 305 or better once you get to regionals. But luckily we’ve still got a couple of weeks. We’ll practice a lot.”
