Naperville Central girls golf coach Jane Thompson missed all of last week after having knee surgery following a wicked summer accident.

But that didn’t mean that she wasn’t keeping tabs on her team.

“Text messaging is good,” Thompson said. “I didn’t really miss practice. They taught me a new technology skill and I think they now regret it.”

Thompson was back in the golf cart for Tuesday’s 186-196 DuPage Valley Conference dual meet victory over West Aurora at Naperbrook.

“The one thing about golf is that it’s an individual sport, so you know what you need to improve and what you need to work on,” Central senior Sarah DeGeeter said. “It was like you knew what she would be talking about and you just keep practicing it.”

DeGeeter was the medalist, pacing the Redhawks with a 43 on a day that felt more like regionals in early October than the day after Labor Day. Hannah Zeeb followed with a 46 from the No. 2 slot, with Avleen Bhandal (48) and Lauren Santangelo (49) also posting counting scores.

“We can go a lot lower with my No. 1 and No. 2,” Thompson said. “Each one of them today had one blow-up hole. Courtney (Pezza)’s score (57) is not indicative of what she’s been able to do. We’re looking to keep all the scores in the mid-40s. Right now, they’re just sniffing at it. They’ll be OK. It’s still early.”

After heavy graduation losses from last season, including Emma Ondik and Caroline Wong, the Redhawks are much younger this season, and the team’s early 3-2 dual meet record reflects it. They are now 2-0 in the DVC.

“We did lose a lot of girls from last year, most of our varsity team, so it was like a big change that everybody had to step up this year,” DeGeeter said. “It has showed that we have improved from last year. I think as the season goes on, we’ll get better and better.”

West Aurora (4-4, 0-3) was paced by senior LaRi Mitchell’s 45 and a 46 from sophomore Jordan Lange. Kara Smith (52) and Alex Robertson (53) posted the Blackhawks’ other scores.

“I just wish we had some more consistency,” West coach Chris Soulsby said. “My expectations are higher, and honestly, their expectations are higher. They set their expectations to win the conference title. We’re not going to get that done. But we’d like to be more competitive, and there’s no reason that they can’t be within four or five strokes every match with just about everybody.”
