Lockport’s Tom Razo Jr. doesn’t feel any extra pressure having his dad as his cross country coach.

That was evident Tuesday as Razo won a varsity race for the first time and the Porter boys team had the top three finishers in winning the SouthWest Suburban Cross Country Preseason Invite Tuesday at Channahon Park.

“It’s different to have my dad as a head coach, but I’m used to it because he’s coached me for so long,” Razo said. “I don’t feel any pressure, I feel more pride to keep the family name going.”

Razo won with a time of 16 minutes, 18.9 seconds to pace the Porters first place finish of 86 points. Will Giroux was second with a time of 16:34.6 and teammate J.T. Orban followed with a time of 16:35.1.

“It’s neat because it’s his first varsity victory,” the elder Razo said of his son. “He did what he was supposed to do, holding out at first and then running hard at the end.”

Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West tied for second with a score of 98. Other top area individuals were Bolingbrook’s Stephen Garrett in fourth with a time of 16.36.2. Lincoln-Way Central’s Dru Rozewicki was seventh at 16:41.5, Lincoln-Way West’s Mark Pedziwiatr eighth at 16:42.5, Joliet Central’s Sam Clinton had an 11th-place finish at 16:45.8 and Joliet West’s Hugo Hernandez took 12th at 17:02.

Lockport continued its individual dominance on the girls side as Megan O’Brien finished first at 18:10.4 and teammate Steph Sanders was second at 18:41.3. However the Porters finished runner-up to Sandburg 46-48.

Still O’Brien was excited to be back at full strength after coming off an injury.

“It’s really nice because I had a (left) leg injury in track season and then missed eight weeks of running over the summer,” O’Brien said. “I was really nervous at how I would do, but I had a better time than I did here last year.”

Lincoln-Way West took third at 107 points, Lincoln-Way East was fourth at 109, Lincoln-Way Central fifth with 132, Joliet West seventh at 183 and Joliet Central 10th at 279.

Other top area individuals on the girls side were Lincoln-Way Central’s Alena Pacheco in fourth at 19:32.3, Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Waters in fifth at 19:36.8, Lincoln-Way East’s Nicole Nepote sixth at 19:43.1, Lockport’s Samantha Stanley eighth with a mark of 19:51.2, Bolingbrook’s Maria Hernandez ninth at 20:02.2 and Lincoln-Way East’s Kaley McLawhorn in 10th at 20:05.4.
