Miller, Trevians prevail at Prospect

Stephanie Miller didn’t let one bad hole ruin her round Wednesday at Mount Prospect Golf Club.
The Stevenson junior took a double bogey on the short par-4 13th to fall back to even par, but the defending state champion rallied with two birdies over the final five holes to card a 2-under 69 to earn medalist honors at Prospect’s invitational. Miller edged out New Trier’s Elizabeth Szokol, last year’s fifth-place finisher who shot matching 36s for a 1-over 72, for first place.
“It was insanity out there,” said Miller, who made five birdies. “I hit five fairways and 12 greens. That’s awful. I have no idea what happened, but I was putting pretty good.”
Miller got on the right side of par when she punched a 4-iron underneath a tree on the par-5 15th and watched the ball roll to 10 feet. She missed the eagle putt, but she tapped in for birdie. She then birdied No. 17 before closing out her day by holing a 35-footer for par on the 18th.
Behind Northwestern-bound Szokol, the defending state champion Trevians easily won the team title with a 305. Prospect came in second in the six-team field with a 321. Senior Allison Walsh, who played with Miller and Szokol, shot 76.
“It was great competition within the group,” said Szokol, whose one birdie came at the 15th.
New Trier’s Callie Nelson came in third with a 74. After touring the front nine in 40, the junior bounced back by playing the back nine 2-under. Ellie McGuire (78) and Dana Gullen (81) rounded out New Trier’s scoring.
