Fenwick takes down Homewood-Flossmoor

The players on Fenwick’s girls water polo team wouldn’t talk about it with each other. But the Friars’ loss last year in the quarterfinals to Homewood-Flossmoor lingered in the back of their minds all season.
The Friars were finally able to let go of the loss that ended their two-year reign at the top and atone for the mistake of looking past H-F last season with a 10-7 victory Thursday over the Vikings in a state quarterfinal at Stevenson.
“As seniors we never even brought up the loss from last year because we didn’t want to bring the negativity we felt from it to the younger kids,” Friars senior Maggie Carey said. “But in our minds, that was our motivation and it feels so much better to get that win under our belts.”
Fellow senior Annie Collins (three goals) and Carey (two goals) made sure it would be different for Fenwick (24-8), which has ensured itself a state trophy after missing out on one for the first time in seven years last season.
“It always is nice to get revenge, but that’s not what this win was about for us,” Collins said. “It’s about us playing together and seeing what we can do as a group and trying to win the whole thing.”
Freshman Cara Borkevec had two goals and three assists, Maureen Barron (two goals) and Gena Wendt (four assists) also contributed and goalie Mackenzie Bonk (10 saves) did well to settle her team during a tight first three periods.
Homewood-Flossmoor (29-4) never let the Friars get too far out in front and tied the score at 4 with 5:39 left in the third on the second goal in less than a minute by Rebecca Mathews (three goals, two assists).
Hannah Ongman and Michelle Mayer each scored twice and goalie Sophie Schloen made 10 saves for the Vikings, who kept closing the gap after Fenwick would take the lead before being outscored 4-2 in the fourth.
“We fought back,” H-F coach Pat Duignan said. “If you want to talk about a kid that wants to win, you saw exactly why we’re going to miss [Mayer] so much next year. She left everything behind.”
The Friars will face Mother McAuley in a state semifinal at 9 a.m. Saturday. Fenwick won both games against the Might Macs during the regular season.
