Thornton’s Faust tough at sectional
Updated: May 19, 2011 10:22PM
Thornton senior Timothy Faust said he had just one thought running through his head before every one of his events in Thursday night’s Class 3A Bloom Sectional.
“The whole time I said, ‘This is my race, this is my time,’ and it showed.”
To be sure, when Faust was on the track it was showtime.
Faust – and the Wildcats – were absolutely dominant, to the point where even though the meet hadn’t officially ended when the lights went out, they had already clinched the team championship.
One event – the triple jump – is to be contested among the nine finalists today (4 p.m.) at Thornridge High School. Event official LaVon Burks deemed that the board used for the event on Thursday did not meet sectional standards.
Faust was victorious in the 100-meter dash (10.60), 200-meter dash (21.38) and was part of the Wildcats team victories in the 4x100-meter relay (42.71) and 4x200-meter relay (1:27.43) events.
With 17 of 18 events complete, Thornton had 95 points, with Homewood-Flossmoor in second (54).
Faust finished off his night with a 200-meter effort that bested his runnerup time at state (21.79) in 2010.
“I was a little tired, but I pulled it off in the end,” Faust said. “Hopefully (at state) I’ll go out there and give people what they’re looking for.”
Faust’s teammates in the relay runs were Demitri Smith, Jalen Banks, Madalian Noble and Jalen Banks.
Nathaniel Whittington also contributed to the Thornton cause by winning in the shot put (52-02.50) and discus (165-02).
London Hawk of Thornwood had a big night, capturing three events. Hawk prevailed in the 400-meter dash (47.88) and the 800-meter run (1:54.58), and was the anchor man in the 4x400-meter relay event.
“I was a little surprised, especially in the 400,” Hawk said. “I went out (at the end) with Ephraim (Dorsey) and I thought I’d be a little tight. But surprisingly I wasn’t.”
Other area sectional champions included Tom Rotondi of Lincoln-Way East (1600-meter run), Rashad Hulbert of Crete-Monee (300-meter hurdles), Gary Ford of Thornridge (110-meter hurdles), Sean Fitzgerald of Providene (high jump), Joel Swanberg of Lincoln-Way Central and Mikial McCall of Thornridge (long jump).
