A strong offensive first quarter and an impressive game by goalie E.B. Keeve keyed Waubonsie Valley’s 9-5 sectional quarterfinal win Wednesday against Hinsdale South.
The second-seeded Warriors (15-12) knocked off the seventh-seeded Hornets (13-16) with the help of three first-quarter goals by Alex White and two by Lauren Stercay. Both girls finished with four. Amanda Peart scored the Warriors’ other goal for the game.
“I think we’re doing better offensively,” coach Diana Mehl said. “But I think our defense is probably our strongest suit. We know that we have to shoot more and that’s something that comes with more confidence when you have a young team.”
Keeve, a senior, made 19 saves. Many came on leaping plays and nearly all of her stops thwarted promising scoring opportunities for Hinsdale South.
“They lobbed a lot and I just had to prepare because they shot them all over,” Keeve said. “So I just had to be mentally prepared to get ready for any kind of shot because they’re a team that could shoot it from anywhere and they understood our weaknesses, and than adapt to it and start shooting in our weaker spots.”
Patty Zaporowski made nine saves for the Hornets. Her team trailed 5-0 after one period but jumped back into the game thanks to the steady scoring of Eleni Murphy, who scored once in the third and thrice in the final period. Claire Manley scored Hinsdale South’s only other goal with 3:01 remaining in the second.
Waubonsie Valley’s win sets up a date with third-seeded Naperville North (19-10) at 4:30 p.m. in Friday’s sectional semifinal.
“It was real good,” Hornets coach Frank Kuchta said of his team’s showing. “We played them earlier this season and they beat us 13-3, so I thought we played pretty well.
