Mundelein heads back to state
Mundelein overcame some early jitters Saturday at its own boys gymnastics sectional.
The Mustangs scored a season-best 150.10 to advance to the state finals for the first time since 2005.
Mundelein will advance to next Friday’s team competition at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. The Mustangs will join Lincoln-Way Co-op, Wheaton Co-op, Downers Grove North and Palatine, who all won sectional titles earlier this week.
“I am reserved, but happy,” Mundelein coach Jessie Piland said. “It is great to advance to the finals. We had some mistakes, so we have some things to work on.”
Highland Park was second with a 148.35 and Glenbrook South was third with a 144.55. They will join Naperville North as at-large teams on Friday.
Libertyville’s Craig Breckenridge won the all-around with a 52.95. Glenbrook South’s Adam Klosowiak was second with a 52.25 and Highland Park’s Robbie Brown was third with a 51.95.
Breckenridge won the pommel horse with a 9.20 and the vault with a 9.35.
Klosowiak won the high bar with a 9.00 and Brown won the parallel bars with a 9.55.
Buffalo Grove’s Kyle Siebert won the rings with an 8.95. His teammate Julian Vasquez tied Stevenson’s Scott Siegel and Glenbrook North’s Nate Elfant on the floor with a 9.30.
