H-F takes meet, conference

It’s not unusual for Abieyawa Ehimwenman to double up and win the long jump and triple jump. By her reckoning, the Homewood-Flossmoor senior has done so four times this outdoor season.
Thursday’s twin triumph came in the most important meet of the season and helped lead the Vikings to the Southwest Suburban Blue girls conference title.
“We all had a goal to come out here and leave our hearts on the track,” Ehimwenman said. “That’s what we did. It means a lot to me. All the times I’ve been on the team, we’ve won it. It’s a great tradition to keep going.”
In the SWSC Blue, that’s a major achievement. The Vikings, scoring 152 points, had to fend off challenges from Bolingbrook (117) and surprise third-place finisher Lincoln-Way Central (85) to capture the crown. Lincoln-Way East (80) took fourth.
“We’re in a tough conference,” Ehimwenman said. “My senior class, we have a lot of great track and field athletes. It’s not easy, but it’s not really too hard.”
It wasn’t all Ehimwenman. Homewood-Flossmoor’s LaChrissa Safforld won the discus, while the Vikings’ Courtney Salley (16.06) and Taylor Lynch (16.20) ran 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles.
The big upset in field was Lincoln-Way Central’s Paige Siwinski capturing the high jump. She reached a season-best height of 5 feet, 2 inches to edge Homewood-Flossmoor’s Christina Patterson, who also cleared 5-2, but with more misses.
One minor surprise before the rain came was the victory of Bolingbrook’s Carbina Capers in the shot put. Her best put, 34-11, beat Homewood-Flossmoor’s Amanda Morgan by three inches. Capers was seeded second, Morgan fifth.
Other events followed the form chart more closely. Lincoln-Way East’s Aaliyah Brown raced to victory in both the 100 (12.10 and 200 (24.34), doing so in a light rain in the latter case.
“There was rain in my eyeball,” Brown said to teammate Maria Perozzi after crossing the 200 finish line.
Lincoln-Way Central sophomore Alena Pacheco cruised to victory in the 3,200-meter run, with freshman Mallory Johnson making it a 1-2 finish for the Knights.
“I was happy with my placement,” Pacheco said after finishing in 12:08. “I wasn’t close to my best time, but our coach said to go out and compete, and I guess we went out and competed.”
