Highland Park co-op’s Robbie Brown let some muscle strain in his left shoulder keep him from competing Thursday at the Central Suburban Conference meet at Evanston.
Brown was able to only practice one event - the pommel horse - for the last week becuase of the injury. Brown pushed through all six events and won the all-around title with a 52.25.
“I just did what I could in practice,” said Brown who is a senior. “I took out some of the difficulty in my routines. It just made me focus on being a lot cleaner. “
“Robbie is a real trooper,” Highland Park coach Doug Foerch said. “He came out and did what he had to do out there.”
Brown’s performance helped lift Highland Park to the team title with a 147.60. Glenbrook South was second with a 144.70 and Niles North was third with a 128.55.
By winning the conference tournament, Highland Park was able to tie for the conference title with Glenbrook South.
“That is exciting for us,” Foerch said.
“We just made a few mistakes tonight,” Glenbrook South coach Steve Gale said. “But better to do that tonight then next week at sectionals.”
Brown’s extra work on the pommel horse paid off as Brown won the event with an 8.50. Brown also won the parallel bars with a 9.70 and he tied Glenbrook North’s Nate Elfant on the vault with a 9.00.
