Waukegan’s girls track team finished a strong second to Lake Zurich on Thursday at the Lake County Invitational girls track meet at Grayslake North High.
The champion Bears totaled 74.5 points compared to 67 for Waukegan. Warren was a distant third with 46.
The Bears won the title with superior depth as they only had one individual winner (400 dash).
Meanwhile, Waukegan got wins from Ebony Smith in the long jump and 100-meter dash, from Kanedra Lee in the 200, and from the 400 and 800 relay teams that features Smith, Lee, Cierra Goodman and Aliyah Reams.
“It would be easy for me to complain about our lack of depth, but we had 48 girls come out this year, and that’s a big reason for our success,” said Waukegan coach Sean Collins. “These girls have worked very hard.”
Smith was the meet’s only double-winner.
In the 300 hurdles, Chelsea Maxey of Zion-Benton and Amy Polhemus of Lake Zurich finished 1-2 and both ran times that would qualify them for state if they ran it at the sectional level in two weeks.
In the 1,600 relay, Vernon Hills’ winning effort was four seconds better than the state qualifying standard, so the Cougars should be able to reach that mark at the sectional.
In the 3,200 relay, Grayslake Central’s 10:01 effort also topped the state standard.
