The No. 2 doubles team was tops Wednesday for Andrew.
Theresa Curran and Sam Labus captured the second doubles championship and in the process helped put the Thunderbolts in a strong position to capture the overall SouthWest Suburban Red badminton conference crown at Lincoln-Way West.
Going into today’s singles matches, the conference title is up for grabs. Doubles matches took place among the six conference contenders in a tournament-style format, with team points given to the first-, second- and third-place finishers in each of the five doubles positions.
Andrew scored 20 points, one behind Bradley. Lincoln-Way Central has 15 and Lincoln-Way West has 13.
“(Wednesday) was a good indication of how things may work out (today),’’ Andrew coach Mandee Wettergren said. (Today) is a whole new day, and hopefully, we come to play.’’
Curran and Labus came to play, defeating Bradley’s Marissa Langlois and Lindsey Cooke 23-21, 21-18. The Andrew tandem was down by three points in the middle of the second game but came storming back.
“We just looked at each other and said, ‘Come on,’ ’’ Curran said. “We had mostly unforced errors when we fell behind.’’
“We just kept positive out there,’’ Labus said.
Andrew’s top team, Marissa Ripoli and Jill Trumpey, finished in third place after having played together only once before. Trumpey stepped in for the injured Rene Olson, who was out with an injury.
“Going to doubles is hard because I’m a singles player,’’ Trumpey said. “I really learned a lot today.’’
“We made a huge improvement just today,’’ Ripoli said. “A couple of more days and we will be much better.’’
Jessica Cimaroli and Veronica Bladerman captured second for Central in the No. 1 slot while teammates Tegan Harris and Megan Powless captured the No. 5 title.
“Our No. 5 doubles played great. They really pulled together,’’ Central coach Liz Karalas said. “We are pretty geeked for (today).’’
West remained in the thick of things after a championship at the No. 4 spot from the newly formed team of Danielle Strayer and Emily Bowsher. They won all three matches in the minimum two games after having been formed as a team Tuesday.
“They played with a lot of energy,’’ West coach Donna Thompson said. “Both players have a great attitude and bounce-back ability.’’
