There were duels between duos Wednesday at Joliet Central during Day 1 of the SouthWest Suburban Blue badminton tournament.

Sandburg came away with three doubles titles, but it was a Lockport duo that brought home the highest honor.

Lockport’s Lisa Miotti and Becca Krzyszkowski took home the conference title at No. 1 doubles, winning three matches, including a 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 thriller over Sandburg’s Carolyn Brown and Rachel Allen in the championship.

Team standings were not released Wednesday after doubles competition. The singles portion of the tournament will be held today at Joliet Central.

“I can’t even find words to describe it,” Miotti said after she and Krzyszkowski improved to 29-12. “We beat Sandburg, and we always want to beat Sandburg.

“In the third game we played with the attitude that we were going to win. We just kept pushing and pushing.”

This time last season Miotti and Krzyszkowski were celebrating a conference championship at No. 5 doubles. With seven players graduating in 2010, the Porters were forced to put players in news spots.

“There’s a big difference between No. 5 and No. 1,” Krzyszkowski said. “It was kind of the bottom of the doubles last season, but with all of our seniors leaving we needed to pull it together, and we did.”

For Sandburg, although its newly formed No. 1 team fell in the championship, the Eagles won titles at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 doubles in a quest for the team’s third straight conference championship. Vicky Gugala and Alexis Andrews won at No. 2, Katie Wagner and Kara Kentner won at No. 3 and Alyssa Murray and Rebecca Cuculich won at No. 4.

“We played aggressive all the way through,” Sandburg coach Kim Huelsman said. “What it boils down to is the ability to sustain through the ups and downs, because it’s a roller coaster for all the girls.

“Hopefully, (today) we play our game and there aren’t as many ups and downs.”

Lincoln-Way East’s Ali Dwyer and Jess Vorderer won at No. 5 doubles.

Homewood-Flossmoor was led by Clare Hamilton and Val Falvo, who finished third at No. 4.
