Top 5 teams
1. New Trier: After a three-year stranglehold on the team title by St. Viator, New Trier appears ready to break out and earn its 10th crown. Dave Berlinghof and Ken Wienckowski figure to lead the way.
2. Lake Forest: The Scouts were third at state last year, and look ready to maintain that success behind the likes of Perry Johnson and Charlie Marshall.
3. Lyons: The Lions return four players from last year's sixth-place team in Class 3A and look to contend in a wide-open field. Kevin Workman is the No. 1, but Kevin Carlson will be a key shot, as well.
4. St. Viator: St. Viator lost individual state champion Dan Stringfellow and two other starters to graduation, but it's hard to count out the three-time defending champs. The Lions have a staggering 25 players on the varsity team to gun for No. 4.
5. Waubonsie Valley: The Warriors were a surprise team at the state meet last year, and return the entire squad to make another run. Senior Thomas O'Bryan recently made the cut at the Illinois Amateur and opened the season with a 66 Monday.
