Top 5 teams

1. Hinsdale Central: The four-time defending state champs sent two former players to Division I tennis, and legendary coach Jerilyn Scardina retired. But the Red Devils have reloaded behind fourth-place doubles team Marika Cusick and Kristy Hamilton and take aim on a fifth straight crown.

2. Lake Forest: The Scouts may be the biggest challenger to Hinsdale Central, backed by four returnees who were top-16 seeds at state last year. Faith Bassiouny and Taya Zourbareva placed third in doubles last year and are back.

3. Benet: The Redwings have gone 42-1 in duals the past two seasons, and have all but one player back from those teams. Junior Cassie Kovach and the doubles team of juniors Madeline Carney and Kim Simmons will pave the way this season.

4. Homewood-Flossmoor: The Vikings are poised to jump into the top five this year behind singles star Adesuwa Osabuohien and No. 1 doubles team Faith Huckabee and Dana Shannon.

5. New Trier: The Trevians are always tough, and will see where they stand when they face Hinsdale Central in a dual meet Sept. 2. Doubles stalwarts Emily Barretta and Rebecca Ritchie return to lead the way on a squad with three talented freshmen making the varsity team.
