Parade Honors Bobek: Fremd offensive lineman Brian Bobek, who signed with Ohio State this week, has been named to the Parade All-America team.

Marks on the Mark: Plainfield Central guard Derrick Marks became his school's sixth basketball player to hit the 1,000 point plateau on Jan. 15 in a 55-52 victory over Minooka. The 6-3 senior, who is headed to Boise State, now is fifth on his school's all-time scoring list and figures to be the Wildcats' No. 2 all-time scorer before the season is over. Dave Needham (1957-60) is first with 1,757 points and Ryan Sharp (2003-05 is second with 1.197.

Schmitt sighting: New Trier girls basketball forward Abbey Schmitt, who is headed to Princeton, was in uniform on the bench Saturday during the final round of the Sweet 16 tournament at Lake Zurich. Schmitt, who suffered an ACL tear late in the summer has not played, was waring a brace on her knee. She might not return this season, but coach Teri Rodgers said that Schmitt has been at practice.

Football clinic: New Northern Illinois football coach Dave Doeren will speak at Chicago Catholic League's 65th annual football clinic Feb. 26 at Fenwick. Doeren, Cincinnati's Butch Jones and two Big Ten assistants highlight the clinic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jones will speak from 11 to 11:50 a.m. on "The Spread Game," while Doeren's topic is "NIU Defenses" from 12:45 to 1:35 p.m. Other scheduled clinic speakers are Adam Cushing of Northwestern on "Offensive Line Play" (9 to 9:50 a.m.), Vic Koenning of Illinois on "Illini Defenses" (10 to 10:50 am.) and former Catholic League coach Bob Carksie on "The Zone Run Game" (1:45 to 2:35 p.m.) For more information, call Fenwick coach Joe DiCanio at (708) 386-0127 Ext. 156 or e-mail him at jdicanio@fenwickfriars.com

IHSA Leaders pass away: Two former Illinois High School Association administrators have died in recent weeks. Lavere "Liz" Astroth, who served as IHSA executive director from 1978 to ‘91, died Jan. 23 in Kansas City at the age of 89. Don Robinson, who served as assistant executive director from 1978-91 and associate executive director from 1991-99, died Sunday, in Peoria at the age of 72 after recently being diagnosed with cancer.

Tennis coaches workshop: The University of Illinois will host a workshop for high school tennis coaches on Saturday Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign-Urbana. The workshop will include presentations by Brad Dancer (Illinois men's coach), Michelle Dasso (Illinois women's coach), Steve Oldenburg (Illinois strength and conditioning), Mark Bey (USPTA Professional from the Chicago area), and Bryan Smith (USPTA Professional from Indianapolis).
