Sun-Times top girls water polo teams, players

Teams

1. Lyons: The Lions became the first public school to win a water polo state title last year. Juniors Kirby Kaptur and Lizzy Kosin lead a young and talented core eyeing a second straight undefeated season. Senior goalie Grace Trilla (fourth on the team in assists last year) will anchor the defense.

2. Homewood-Flossmoor: Michelle Mayer and Rebecca Mathews combined for 202 goals last year to lead the Vikings to a fourth at state. Hannah Ongman and goalie Sophie Schloen also return for the team that ended Fenwick's bid for three consecutive state titles.

3. Naperville Central: Emily Sejna and Abbey Kerth are possibly the strongest pair of two-way players in the state. Goalie Julia Campbell was a post-season force for a team that has finished in the top four the last three seasons.

4. Mundelein: Indiana recruit Alexi Jones and goalie Emily Tylka, one of the best goalie in the state, will be the biggest factors in the Mustangs' push for a second consecutive state tournament appearance.

5. St. Ignatius: Senior Kate Stelnicki helped lead the Wolfpack to the state title game last year and is one of the state's best. Sophomore Rebecca Insalaco scored 31 goals as a freshman to emerge as viable attacking option.
