St. Charles East and St. Charles North resumed their rivalry Saturday, this time in boys swimming at the St. Charles North Sectional.

St. Charles East held the lead for most of the day, but the North Stars were able to capture the team title, 285-277.

“Well, it wasn’t the prettiest of meets for us on paper, but I’m happy to win sectionals,” said St. Charles North coach Robert Rooney. “We should be in the hunt at state, but there are a lot of good teams that have a chance.”

St. Charles North led the way with 11 qualifiers for the state meet next week in Evanston. North Stars represented will include junior Nick Kowaleski, who swam a 48.33 in the 100-yard freestyle which was the exact time needed to qualify.

“I guess you can say I got the time that I needed,” said Kowaleski. “This will be my third trip down to state and my second as an individual. I really hope to place this year.”

Brothers Joey and David Chokran also qualified for St. Charles North in the 100-yard breaststroke after Joey finished in first with a time of 59.86 and David in second with a time of 1:00.74.

“It’s pretty awesome to finish one and two with my brother,” said Joey Chokran. “I finished in the top 12 last year and would love a top-six finish this year.”

The North Stars other state qualifiers include their 200-yard medley relay team, Chris Dieter and Kyle Gannon in the 200-yard freestyle, Joey Chokran and Spencer Gray in the 200-yard individual medley, Dieter in the 100-yard freestyle, Gannon and Gray in the 500-yard freestyle, and the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

St. Charles East had an impressive showing as well. The Saints will be sending six swimmers to next week’s state meet. Leading the way for St. Charles East was senior Shaun Seuschek, who won sectionals in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly. Also qualifying for the Saints were the 200-yard medley relay team, Alec Carnell in the 100-yard freestyle, Will Shanel in the 500-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team.

“I was pleased with my times which were better than last year,” said Seuschek. “My goal at state is to finish in the top six.”

Other qualifiers from Saturday’s sectional included South Elgin’s Nick Hasemann, who won the 200 freestyle 1:41.37, and Alex Duffy (2nd in 200 IM in 1:57.37).

St. Charles East’s Max Schmitt also qualified as a diver.
