Boys Basketball: Indians keep on rolling

MUNSTER — Ten days prior, as the clock wound down on Munster’s victory over EC Central, the Mustangs’ student section chanted, “We want LC!”
Tuesday night, the Mustangs got their chance — but it was the Indians who delivered.
Lake Central’s 53-49 victory handed Munster its first loss of the season and its first loss at home since 2007.
“You don’t walk into this building thinking you’re going to come away with a 20-point victory,” said Lake Central (6-1, 4-0 DAC) head coach Dave Milausnic. “Talk to any team in the state. If you can come into this gym and walk away with a win, you’re happy about it.”
With 30 seconds left, the Mustangs (5-1) trailed Lake Central by three and had the ball. But neither Nate Bubash nor Drew Hackett could get their 3-point attempts to fall, preserving the win for the Indians.
“(Lake Central) is definitely the best team around,” said Munster head coach Mike Hackett. “They’ve got talent, they’ve got depth ... what don’t they have? For us to have a chance with under 30 seconds to tie the game, that’s all I can ask for.”
Playing in front of a raucous sellout crowd, Munster trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but clawed back to tie the game at 47 in the fourth quarter. Then a Glenn Robinson III drive drew in the Munster defense, leaving senior Zach Gentz alone in the corner to drain a 3-pointer.
“It felt good out of my hand; it had a good rotation on it,” Gentz said of his only shot attempt in the game, which provided the game-winning points. “I took a quick look at the defense, saw no one was near me, and just let it fly.”
Lake Central also benefitted from forcing Munster into foul trouble, thanks in large part to the inside play of 6’7” sophomore Tyler Wideman. A pair of Mustang starters — Scott Jerge and Nate Bubash—fouled out of the game, while Mark Strbjak, another starter played most of the fourth quarter with four fouls.
“That’s what happens when Tyler posts up and we get it to him,” Milausnic said. “He’s got good feet and good hands—that’s a tough combination. I thought that was a big difference in the game.”
Wideman finished the game with 14 points, while Robinson III added 13 to lead the Indians. Bubash and Mark Schlotman had 14 points each for the Mustangs.
