Wrestling: SB Clay edges Lake Central for Munster crown

MUNSTER — At one point during the much anticipated match between 220-pound wrestlers Gelen Robinson from Lake Central and South Bend Clay’s Joe Gallegos, Clay coach Al Hartman yelled to Gallegos “stop trying to tackle him, this isn’t a football game.”
The two chiseled wrestlers indeed looked like they should have been wearing helmets and shoulder pads instead of wrestling singlets.
Gallegos scored a five-point move with a take down and a near fall in a deadlocked match and beat Robinson 11-6 in the final seconds as the Colonials held off a determined Lake Central squad 42-30 to repeat as the Munster Super Duals champions.
Clay went a perfect 5-0 on the day and also had five unbeaten wrestlers in the tournament, including Gallegos. The Indians held a 24-15 advantage at one point.
“We were there halfway through the match,” Indians coach Rod Wartman said. “They are a good team, a very physical team; we were a little shorthanded due to some injuries, but no excuses. It was a good day for Kyle (Ayersman); he went 5-0 on today.”
The Indians finished the day 3-2, losing in the third round to East Noble, which also went 5-0 on the day. Robinson, Iassac Popovich, Jeff Brassea, Matt Lechowicz and Brandon Manchak went 4-1 on the day for the Indians.
“Munster has had the upper-hand on us the last couple of years so it was good to beat them,” said Wartman after the Indians downed Munster 53-15 in the fourth round. “We have to continue working to get better and we plan on getting better.”
Griffith had a successful day, finishing 3-2, and had one 5-0 wrestler on the day in Nathan Reitz.
“I’m happy with the way we wrestled today,” Griffith coach Travis Walls said.
“We’ve had a few injuries and we’re a little shorthanded but we wrestled well. We had six kids with at least four wins (Cedric Fossoth, Louie Martinez, Preston Nelson, Tyler Yost and Connor Quizor) and Nate (Reitz) was undefeated.”
Host Munster went 2-3 on the day, but had four wrestlers who were named as outstanding wrestlers going at least 4-1 in Dominic Fimbianti, Adam Bogs, Ian Boston and John Nauracy.
LaPorte also went 2-3 on the day, but had three of their wrestlers — Zach Robbins, Kyle Stachowski and Cody Mollican — take home outstanding wrestler shirts.
