CROWN POINT — Fans and team members went wild as the final seconds ticked away Friday night, as Boone Grove won its first game of the season — and its first game ever against an IHSAA opponent — with a 23-12 victory over Roosevelt.

Going against a struggling Roosevelt (2-5) team, the Wolves (1-7) looked sharp against the Panthers, who had a total of 18 penalties for 160 yards.

Boone Grove quarterback Dean Hill helped the Wolves score first as he gave the ball to wide receiver Daniel Malouhos, who made a brilliant 21-yard run into the end zone with 10:28 left in the second quarter. Hill kicked the point after.

The next strike was a 28-yard Boone Grove field goal kicked by Hill with only nine-tenths of a seconds left in the first half, sending the Wolves into the locker room with a 10-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Cody Poynter ran for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 17-0 with 7:04 left in the quarter.

The imposing tight end Jake Clapp — who also made his presence felt from his defensive end spot — helped the drive with a 15-yard reception.

Roosevelt got on the board when Jerry Ruiz took a Deron Townton handoff with 5:57 left in the third and ran 19 yards for a touchdown. But the Panthers failed to make the two-point conversion, leaving the score 17-6.

The Panthers continued to show some life when Ruiz added an 11-yard TD run with seven seconds left in the third to cut the lead to 17-12.

But Boone’s Jason Sawa had a 12-yard run for a touchdown with 4:36 left in the game to secure the Wolves’ first victory.
