East Chicago routs Bowman
EAST CHICAGO — It was an eventful senior night for East Chicago players and fans to say the least.
It started with the pregame ceremony honoring all the senior football players. Then, there were the 638 total yards and 10 touchdowns in Friday’s 67-26 win over Bowman Academy at Pete Rucinski Field.
However, senior night might actually be best remembered for the halftime antics which featured two fights and nearly led to a cancelled second half.
Halftime lasted more than 30 minutes as Bowman’s players and coaches — who just had a little skirmish with the Cardinals at midfield — had its own internal fight on the field.
Eventually Bowman coach Rob Gross sat down with the officials and worked things out, promising that his players would be on their best behavior in the second half.
But the damage was already done — on the field anyway — by the Cardinals’ explosive offense as they went into the locker room with a 53-14 lead.
Quarterback Everett Coleman had quite a memorable night himself passing for 150 yards and three touchdowns; he also ran for 64 yards and three TDs.
“It was wonderful. It was a great feeling,” said Coleman, who was named Mr. Touchdown last week at the homecoming game. “I couldn’t do it without the line at all. I just wanted the victory. This is my last home game. It feels pretty good. A lot of hard work pays off.”
East Chicago (6-2), which has won six straight games for the first time since 2004, could do no wrong with the football as sophomore running back Martayveus, who finished with 180 yards rushing, took the first handoff of the game 65 yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals finished the half with Coleman hitting Jacques Hall for a 54 yard TD pass as time expired.
Second-year Cardinals coach Stacey Adams is going to miss Coleman.
“He’s a good athlete and a good team player and one of the best leaders we have on the team,” he said. “As Everett knows, we do nothing without the team effort but Everett is a great leader who leads by example.”
After the touchdown, however, there seemed to be bad blood between both teams. That’s when the madness at mid-field began.
“It was an ugly situation all-around,” Adams said. “I can’t comment on what they have going on. That’s not the way we do things as Cardinals. We don’t get into that extracurricular stuff outside of football.”
The rest of the game was played under a running clock.
Quarterback Antonio Pipken finished 9-for-17 with 278 yards and two touchdowns for Bowman (4-4).
