HAMMOND — There was no shortage of chances for Bishop Noll, as they opened Class A Sectional 33 play with a home match against Marquette.
The Warriors launched 25 shots toward the Marquette net, with a trio of them finding the net in Bishop Noll’s 3-0 victory.
“We did everything that we needed to do tonight, but it took a while for us to get the ball into the net,” said Bishop Noll (12-3-1) head coach Armando Garza. “Their goalie made some pretty big saves, but we also blew some open shots. Hopefully today took some of the butterflies away from them and we can get back to playing soccer again.”
Because of an injury to regular goalkeeper Patrick Roder, Marquette’s Reagan Deporter made his first career start in net, and the Warriors greeted him with a flurry of chances early on. But it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the Warriors got on the scoreboard, thanks to Aaron Garza.
“I got the ball, looked up, and saw that I only had one defender to take,” said Garza, describing the play. “Then I saw the left side of the goal was open, so I went for the shot.”
Several more chances followed for the Warriors, who controlled the majority of the action. Off a corner kick in the final minute, Garza crossed to Angel Zamudio, who corralled the pass and tapped it into an open net, giving Noll a 2-0 halftime lead.
Said Coach Garza: “That goal meant a lot; I was starting to get nervous. We were getting so many chances, but we’d only had one goal out of our team before that one.”
In the 63rd minute, a nice pass from Gonzalo Romo found fellow Warrior Luis Soto in the goal box, and Soto fired a shot off the inside of the post and into the net for the final tally of the game.
