Lake Central routs Chesterton

CHESTERTON — Big plays can define a team. They speak to your ability to rise to the occasion.
Lake Central is one of those teams that thrives on big plays. The Indians can nibble around, probing for weaknesses before delivering the fatal blows once they’ve found the soft fleshy sports
Friday, the Indians pummeled Chesterton 38-7 with a 28-point fourth quarter that was full of big plays.
David Yancey was involved in two of the big plays in the fourth quarter. The first was a 74-yard scamper that opened the flood gates. His last score was a 16-yard run that put the next to the last nail in Chesterton’s coffin.
Yancey, who finished with 199 yards rushing, said the end of the game was important for Lake Central — at least psychologically. Brett St. Germain, the Indians’ coach had delivered a message about going hard until the final horn sounded. They listened very literally. Lake Central was called for two unsportsmanlike penalties in the final seconds — one of them on the sidelines — with a 31-point lead.
“We just needed to finish,” Yancey said. “We needed to have that intensity.”
They did just that.
It was actually close for three quarters.
Chesterton blew its big chance to take control of the game when the Trojans drove all the way from their 30 to the Indians’ 1-foot line.
The Trojans called a timeout to get a play in on fourth down and then were promptly called for illegal procedure.
The game turned when Kyle Schmidt’s 22-yard field goal attempt, which would’ve tied the game at 10, was blocked by Dylan Morang. There was probably no bigger play than that.
It was a huge momentum killer for Chesterton.
“That was a classic example of getting a big play when we needed it,” St. Germain said.
Said Chesterton coach John Snyder: “What was more disappointing wasn’t the block but that we had fourth-and-a foot and we couldn’t get a play off.”
From there, the Indians started to roll.
Jon Vea Johnson caught the second of his two touchdown passes — a 14-yarder from Yancey — to give Lake Central a 17-7 advantage.
Yancey followed with his 74-yard run, giving Lake Central a 24-7 lead.
Morang finished with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The game started promisingly enough for Chesterton when the Trojans jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Cole Teal rumbled in from 6 yards out with 8:17 left in the first quarter.
Lake Central, after sputtering on the first drive, finally got warmed up in the second quarter when David Yancey found Johnson for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 6:30 left in the half. Johnson took the pass in stride over the middle and ran into the end zone virtually untouched. That capped a 12-play, 77-yard drive.
The Indians got one more score on a 20-yard field goal by Brad Uzubell with 10.5 seconds left in the half.
Lake Central had a chance to score on third-and-2 from the three but Yancey was stopped for no gain.
