Lake Central still perfect after pounding Michigan City

ST. JOHN — Six weeks into the season and Lake Central coach Brett St. Germain still has his team in position to accomplish what most observers would have deemed unthinkable.

Yet, what might have been unthinkable to most individuals outside the program has become very believable among those within the Indians’ football family.

“We’ve played six games and we’ve won six, and we’re still in position to win the (Duneland Conference) championship,” St. Germain stated plainly after Friday night’s methodical 35-9 triumph over Michigan City (1-5, 0-4).

The Indians (6-0, 4-0) face a huge test next week when they travel to Chesterton in what looks like a showdown to take control of the DAC race.

“That’s where we show who we are next week,” LC junior quarterback David Yancey said.

All Yancey did Friday night was rush for 194 yards on 18 carries and score a pair of touchdowns on runs of four and 33 yards.

His 33-yard TD with 5:09 left in the third period was an amazing piece of running. The talented Yancey bounced off would-be tacklers like a pinball as he matriculated his way down the field and somehow made his way to the end zone.

“David’s a gifted athlete who can do so much with his feet,” St. Germain said.

Yancey’s incredible run helped the Indians open a 21-3 lead.

“I was determined to make it to the end zone,” he said. “My teammates needed me to score a touchdown — and I just had to do it.”

But it just wasn’t all Yancey that spelled doom for Michigan City.

Drew Hollingsworth rushed 14 times for 63 yards and also scored two TDs — on runs of two and 10 yards, while Chase Fieldhouse added 81 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 10-yard run with 2:31 left.

Yancey even improved his passing numbers — completing eight of 14 attempts for 54 yards.

Lake Central’s defense was miserly, limiting the Wolves to 18 yards rushing and only 167 overall.

Sophomore C.J. Lessentine stood out on the Indians’ defensive line. He had several tackles for loss, a sack, and batted down one of Wolves’ quarterback Joel Hirsch’s passes.

Dylan Morang turned in a solid performance, too, with two interceptions.

Michigan City scored its only TD when Donovan Wilson caught a 15-yard pass from Hirsch with 5:47 remaining.
