CHESTERTON — Chesterton kept its undefeated record alive with an impressive 3-0 victory over conference rival Crown Point in boys soccer.
Chesterton (6-0-1, 4-0 DAC) not only is undefeated but has only allowed one goal so far this season, a tribute to the Trojans’ stellar defense.
“This was a tough game with both teams feeling each other out early but we were able to continue to attack their defense and eventually got some opportunities in the second half to score,” said Chesterton coach James Sensibaugh. “They (Crown Point) are a very good technical team that I really wouldn’t want to play again.”
The first half mirrored that of a heavyweight fight with both Crown Point and Chesterton waiting for each other to make a mistake. The mistakes didn’t happen as both showed stellar defenses.
Crown Point had the wind in its favor in the first half and had some looks at the goal, but those chances were turned away by the Chesterton defense to end the first half in a scoreless tie.
Chesterton tallied the first goal of the night when junior Zach Froman took a tipped ball and buried it into the back of the net in the 56th minute for the 1-0 lead.
Chesterton took a commanding 2-0 lead in the 68th minute when Ben Molnar, who was positioned perfectly in front of the goal, received a pass from John Morris to drive it past the Crown Point keeper.
“Winning the Duneland conference is a goal of every team and we were able to take another step closer to accomplishing that goal with the win tonight,” Molnar said. “They are a very tough team and anytime you beat a conference rival it’s a good feeling.”
Chesterton got one more goal as the game was ending when Jesse Mudd slid a ball past the keeper with 25 seconds left on the clock.
“Chesterton is a very good team but we had some chances early but could not convert,” said Crown Point coach J.R. Rosenbaum. “We are a little tired after a stretch of six games in seven days but we will work on closing things out and prepare for our next stretch of games.”
