Hobart wins coach Turley’s debut

Hobart kicked off its 2011 campaign and the Ryan Turley era with a dominant 33-6 victory over West Side at the Brickyard on Friday night.
“It’s nice to get that win out of the way,” said Turley, still dripping from his postgame Gatorade shower. “Everyone knows what it feels like doing those two-a-days: you just want to get on the field and face an opponent.”
West Side raised eyebrows on the opening kickoff, as Lionel Johnson raced out to the 47-yard line, giving the Cougars excellent field position. A quick three-and-out followed, however, and a bad snap on the punt attempt gave Hobart the ball at the West Side 27-yard line. Aaron Delgrosso’s 30-yard field goal gave the Brickies an early 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, host Hobart took off.
First, an 84-yard drive was capped by a 5-yard touchdown scamper by Zac Randall, who finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns on the night.
On the next offensive play for West Side, Hobart’s Max Wilson stepped in front of a Cougars pass, returning the interception to the 11-yard line. Randall galloped into the end zone on the next play, giving the Brickies two touchdowns in 16 seconds.
“We just had too many turnovers tonight, and we weren’t good enough to overcome them,” said West Side head coach Jason Johnson, who was also coaching in his first high school game. “We knew we were going to have to jump on them early because we don’t have their numbers. They were able to sustain the game longer than we were.”
A mishandle on the ensuing kickoff buried the West Side offense inside its own 5-yard line. On first down, Cougars QB Wynton Jones was dropped in the end zone for a safety, moving the Brickies ahead 19-0.
“They played well tonight,” Turley said of his defense. “We gave up some big plays, which is going to happen early in the season. We’ll have some things to shore up for next week. But we saw 11 guys get to the ball tonight — that’s what we’re looking for.”
Following the safety, Hobart put another touchdown on the board as Kosich lobbed a 12-yard touchdown to tight end Pete Otero, and Hobart took a 26-0 lead into the half.
The Cougars wouldn’t go quietly in the second half, though. Lionel Johnson tipped a Kosich pass attempt into his own hands and then raced 75 yards for the Cougars’ only score.
But Hobart responded on its next drive with a 28-yard touchdown connection from Kosich to Anthony Burgos, ending any hopes of a Cougar comeback.
