Munster: Ready to blow up

Like most safeties, Munster’s Nick Brajak relishes the big hit.

But Brajak extends his enthusiasm for the big pop to beyond the football field. When he’s not playing football or studying, Brajak works at a Krazy Kaplan’s fireworks store, indulging his affection for explosions.

He’s also an avid hunter and hopes someday to become a ballistics engineer.

“They call me a sales associate slash stockboy,” Brajak said.

“But around the Fourth of July, there’s no time to sell anything. We’re too busy keeping stuff on the shelves. It pays for all the bullets and shells I use hunting.”

To further his career interests, Brajak is attempting to enroll in one of the military academies. He’s currently working through the application process, which culminates in an interview with various Indiana congressmen in an effort to get their nomination to an Academy.

Brajak has developed a fondness for math and science in high school and would like to be able to serve his country. He’s admired armed personnel for as long as he can remember.

And then there’s that thing about blowing things up.

“I really like being in a lab, problem-solving, working with my hands, and building things,” Brajak said. “But it’s sort of weird that I’m interested in both construction and destruction.”

The youngest of four siblings, Brajak’s love of big hits might be in his genes. His father played football at Ohio University and his brother, former Munster standout Alex Brajak, is now playing football as a redshirt junior at Ferris State in Michigan.

Sister Kristin excelled at basketball and track for the Mustangs and his mother played high school basketball at River Forest.

Brajak recounted the endless football games he and his brother played in their back yard.

“He’d basically just kick off to me and then come down and tackle me,” said the 6-2, 185-pound senior. “He would rough me up pretty good, and Kristin did a good job of it, too.”

Brajak spends his down time hunting and fishing, largely with a group of fellow enthusiasts on the football team.

The hobby allows him to use his extensive collection of knives.

“I have an interest in metallurgy,” Brajak said. “People think I’m a whack job because I probably have 45 or 50 knives in my collection.”

Brajak hopes to continue his football career somewhere in college, preferably at one of the academies. If not there, though, he’ll pursue an engineering major elsewhere. With a GPA near 4.0 and good SAT scores, Brajak should have a lot of open doors.

But the first priority is his senior season, and the Mustangs have high expectations. A Northwest Crossroads Conference championship could be within reach, and Munster hopes to make some noise in the meat-grinder Class 5A Sectional 1.

“We have to have the mindset that you can’t ever believe you’re the underdog,” Brajak said. “You can’t put yourself behind before the game even starts.”

Season outlook

In the persons of QB Mark Strbjak and FB/LB Luke Nossem, Munster has two of the most physically impressive football players in the NCC, if not in the whole region. Sprinkle in some other decent athletes and the Mustangs have the recipe for a solid season.

Strbjak enters his senior season having started most of the prior two years and is poised to put up some big offensive numbers. Nossem, who carries a 4.2 GPA and is a vocal leader, added fullback duties in the second half of last season, allowing the Mustangs to keep the ball in the hands of two big, fast players.

Leroy Marsh feels pretty good about his senior class and with a little help from the junior class, he thinks the Mustangs can have a lot of success. Munster should be considered a contender in the conference, but the Mustangs need to get by someone other than Lake Central in the sectional to take the next step forward.
