CROWN POINT — Crown Point’s Amber Haworth and her teammates felt a little pressure wanting to continue the sectional title streak Crown Point has had for the last 16 years. The team came together and played well add the 17th title to the history of Crown Point girls tennis with a 3-2 win over a tough Lowell opponent.

“We felt a little pressure knowing that teams were shooting for us to take the title away but we knew how important it was to us not to end the streak and we came out and played hard and are happy to keep the streak alive,” said Haworth.

Crown Point advanced to the final after defeating Kankakee Valley 4-1 and Lowell defeated Rensselaer 5-0 to set up the final match. Lowell had previously defeated Crown Point 3-2 last Monday and that was on the minds of the Crown Point girls all week long.

“We lost to them last Monday and knew how good they are,” Haworth said. “But we worked hard in practice and came in wanting to avenge the loss and we were able to do that to advance to the regionals.”

The win didn’t come easy for Crown Point as Natalie Johnson captured the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Lowell battled in the No. 2 doubles match with Kristina Stefoski and Jessica Sharkey battling back against Kristin Overbey and Mackensie Shelly. But the Crown Point duo held off the late charge to give Crown Point the third and deciding match.

Although things were already settled, Lowell’s Chloe White remained undefeated for the season with a marathon match against Abby Kvachkoff, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

“Crown Point came out of the gate swinging and we were playing catchup in all the matches,” Lowell coach Kevin Deal said. “Give them credit for their effort, but overall I am very pleased with our girls and the way they played this season.”

The Bulldogs knew they would have their hands full with Lowell.

“Our girls came together as a team and worked hard to correct some things they did wrong against them last week,” Crown Point coach Brian Elston said. “They took the things we worked on to heart and were able to defeat a very good Lowell team to advance to the regional.”
