PORTAGE — Portage was clicking on all cylinders Thursday at its own sectional, and the Indians definitely needed to be. They finished with 137 points, holding off second-place Valparaiso, which finished with 128.
“They put it all together tonight, this was sure a long time coming,” Portage coach John Kappes said. “This is vindication, we’ve been close all season but there’s no place like home.”
The Indians got first-place finishes in the 100 by Jeron Blake with a time of 11.21. Blake also pitched in with Detrek Suggs, Jake Dixon and Othie Freeny to win the 4x100 relay (43.08) and the Indians’ team of Suggs, Blake, Alvin Best and Florian Frenzal won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:25.27.
Best took top honors in the 400-meter with a time of 49.94 and junior Joey Little had a winning throw of 55 feet, 3 inches in the shot put.
“I did better than I thought I would,” said Blake. I’ve been getting ready for this since AAU when I was younger.”
LaPorte’s 4x800-meter relay team of Austin Alcorn, Stuart West, Mitchell Hubner and Joshua Hojnacki broke a two-year old sectional record by more than two seconds with a sub-eight minute time of 7:59.29, eclipsing the 2009 record of 8:01.40 set by Chesterton.
Hubner followed up by winning the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.82. Slicers teammate Austin Epple won the discus with a top throw of 136-11. Skyler Coburn had a winning time of 39.34 in the 300-meter hurdles which broke the five-year-old record of 39.80. Payton McCoy won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.34.
Valparaiso junior Jordan Romanov took home two firsts in the high jump (6-6) and the long jump (21-11.25). Ahmad Aljobeh had a winning time of 9:39.71, finishing six seconds ahead of team mate Peyton Reed.
“Finishing first and second, that was a huge boost for the team,” said Aljobeh. “It was a quick 18 points and the meet all comes down to the 4x400 relay.”
Vikings sophomore Andrew Kittridge took top honors in the 110-meter hurdles with a winning time of 15:44.
Chesterton Junior Justin Zosso shattered the sectional pole vault record by almost a foot with a vault of 15 feet, breaking the old record of 14-6, which stood since 1989.
Ryan Cutter had a winning time of 1:58.80 in the 800 meters.
